Abstract: „This article examines the role played by signs in the public space of two socio-economically stratified residential neighbourhoods of Ghent (Belgium) during the first Covid-19 outbreak in 2020. On the basis of fieldwork, we explore the potential of public signs as a resourceful strategy for communicating solidarity and support and the discursive construction of a community affected by this crisis. We show that in times of lockdown and social distancing, the residential linguistic landscape in both neighbourhoods became strategically appropriated by local inhabitants to communicate with neighbours and strangers and was operationalised as a vehicle to serve new communicative functions such as the conveying of solidarity and support as well as gratitude, and collective belonging. Some differences related to emplacement, language use and quantity of signs were also observed. Overall, the article documents the affective appropriation of space through Covid-19 signs during the Covid-19 outbreak and periods of lockdown in Flanders, Belgium.“

Angaben zum Inhalt: „Public sentiment (the opinion, attitude or feeling that the public expresses) is a factor of interest for government, as it directly influences the implementation of policies. Given the unprecedented nature of the COVID-19 crisis, having an up-to-date representation of public sentiment on governmental measures and announcements is crucial. In this paper, we analyse Dutch public sentiment on governmental COVID-19 measures from text data collected across three online media sources (Twitter, Reddit and Nu.nl) from February to September 2020. We apply sentiment analysis methods to analyse polarity over time, as well as to identify stance towards two specific pandemic policies regarding social distancing and wearing face masks. The presented preliminary results provide valuable insights into the narratives shown in vast social media text data, which help understand the influence of COVID-19 measures on the general public.“

Abstract: „So far, linguistic and translational studies on medical communication have mostly foregrounded the referential function prevailing in texts of this domain. On the contrary, the relatively young discipline of health communication has been paying great attention to persuasive aspects, as shown by the fact that some definitions of the discipline itself and/or of its subject explicitly mention the influence on attitudes and behaviour as one of the goals. The present paper tries to bring these different perspectives closer to each other by adopting a content-ased typology of persuasive strategies and applying it to a linguistic analysis in three languages, i. e. German, Italian and Dutch. The analysis has been carried out on a small corpus of vaccination brochures, as immunisation is currently one of the most debated topics of public health, and therefore an area where persuasion can play a far from secondary role. The comparison between the three languages will highlight some analogies, but also some differences which can be of relevance for translators and other language experts working in this field.“
