Aus der Verlagsmeldung: „Die Niederlande waren für deutsche Juden während des Nationalsozialismus ein Land der Hoffnung, eines neuen Alltags, der enttäuschten Erwartungen und der erneuten Verfolgung. Die antisemitische Politik des »Dritten Reiches« veranlasste in den 1930er-Jahren Hundertausende Juden zur Flucht aus Deutschland. Zu den ersten Exilländern gehörten die benachbarten Niederlande, wo die meisten jedoch nur eine Zuflucht auf Zeit fanden. Der Aufbau einer neuen Existenz gestaltete sich oftmals schwierig. Viele zogen weiter. Diejenigen aber, die diesen Schritt nicht gehen konnten oder wollten, waren nach dem Einmarsch der Wehrmacht im Mai 1940 erneut der nationalsozialistischen Verfolgung ausgeliefert. Tausende wurden in den folgenden Jahren deportiert und ermordet. Christine Kausch nimmt das Leben der jüdischen Flüchtlinge in den Jahren 1933 bis 1945 in den Blick und analysiert auf Basis hunderter Egodokumente sowie zahlreicher weiterer Quellen die individuellen und kollektiven Erfahrungen der Geflüchteten. Die Autorin untersucht, wie die Menschen im Nachbarland aufgenommen wurden, wie sie die erneute Verfolgung erlebten und wie sie auf die jeweiligen Umstände reagierten. Die Studie bietet damit einen wichtigen Beitrag zur jüdischen, niederländischen und deutschen Geschichte.“

Aus der Verlagsmeldung: „Die heute in London lebende Eva Schloss, früher Geiringer, wurde 1929 in Wien geboren. Die Familie musste vor den Nazis fliehen und ging nach Amsterdam ins Exil. Im Haus gegenüber lebte die Familie Frank mit ihrer Tochter Anne. Eva Schloss erzählt in ihrem Buch von der Schwierigkeit jüdischer Menschen, in den von HitlerDeutschland besetzten Niederlanden zu überleben. Neben vielen, die den Verfolgten halfen, gab es auch Verräter. Die Familie Frank wurde deportiert. Nur Annes Vater überlebte das Grauen. Auch die Geiringers entgingen den Häschern nicht. Eva wurde an ihrem 15. Geburtstag verhaftet und nach Auschwitz deportiert. Sie und ihre Mutter überlebten, ihr Vater und ihr Bruder wurden ermordet. Die gemeinsame Trauer führte nach der Befreiung Evas Mutter und Annes Vater zusammen. Sie heirateten.“

Aus der Verlagsmeldung: „7. Februar 1939: Angeekelt und voller Hass verließen Herbert und Ursula Lebram Deutschland, ihre Heimat. Sie flohen vor dem nationalsozialistischen Terror nach Amsterdam, tauchten nach dem deutschen Überfall auf die Niederlande in Alkmaar unter. Nach Kriegsende begannen sie in Amsterdam ein zweites Leben. Diese Geschichte steht exemplarisch für den Lebensweg vieler deutscher Juden, die um die Jahrhundertwende geboren wurden und die Gräuel des Nationalsozialismus erlitten. Das Buch gewährt den Lesern einen tiefen Einblick in das Leben und Empfinden der deutschen Juden in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Der Text macht deutlich, wie normal ihr Leben war - und lässt die Unfassbarkeit ahnen, plötzlich ausgesondert und für lebensunwert erklärt zu werden. Sie hatten selbstverständlich am politischen, kulturellen und gesellschaftlichen Leben im Kaiserreich und der Weimarer Republik teilgenommen. Vor und nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg mussten sie antisemitische Anfeindungen erdulden, ohne sich dadurch in ihrer Lebensführung beirren zu lassen. Daran hielten sie auch nach der Machtergreifung der Nationalsozialisten für lange Jahre fest. Verfolgt in einem Land, dem sie sich patriotisch verbunden fühlten, bewahrten sich viele wie Herbert Lebram die Hoffnung, dass die Diktatur gestürzt und alle Unmenschlichkeit verschwinden würde. Insbesondere für jüngere Generationen aber hält Herbert Lebram eine ganz persönliche Lehre bereit, die durch seine Erfahrung beglaubigt ist: Wer in Erinnerung rufen will, was durch die Schrecken der Geschichte verloren ging, muss zunächst den Schrecken der Geschichte selbst in Erinnerung rufen. Herbert Lebram unternahm den Versuch, das Verlorene - seine deutschen Wurzeln, zu denen er sich auch nach dem Krieg bekannte - zurückzurufen, das Verlorene unter den Trümmern der Geschichte freizulegen. Dies war ihm nur möglich, indem er noch einmal den schmerzhaften und schrecklichen Verlust durchlebte, den er durch den Terror der Nazis erlitt. Der Bruch in der deutschen Geschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts wird am Beispiel Herbert Lebrams auf eindringliche Weise lebendig.“
