Abstract: „This paper analyses everyday practices carried out by the residents of the Saarland, Lorraine, Luxembourg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Wallonia in the neighbouring regions abroad. The key assumption is the consideration that the inhabitants of the Greater Region SaarLorLux define the transborder reality of life of this region through their cross-border performance of everyday practices. Such a socio-constructivist perspective is not interested in what the Greater Region SaarLorLux actually is, but in what ways it is constituted or how it manifests itself in the daily lives of its inhabitants. Therefor the most common cross-border everyday practices, such as shopping for everyday needs, leisure-time shopping, outdoor recreation/tourism, cultural events, as well as visiting friends and family are looked at in greater detail. These observations are based on selected findings from three recent empirical studies of the study region, which have been linked to each other as well as socio-culturally and socioeconomically mapped in order to carve out the spatial organization, the motives and other contextual factors of cross-border everyday practices in the Greater Region SaarLorLux. This approach allows reconstructing mobility flows and spatial emphases in the context of everyday practices and gives insights into the nature of cross-border living realities in the Greater Region SaarLorLux.“

Abstract: „Das Leben in Grenzregionen innerhalb der Europäischen Union ist gerade für die jünge- ren Generationen oftmals normal geworden. Das Überschreiten der Grenzen gehört zum Alltag. In den letzten Jahren, bis vor der Flüchtlingskrise, verloren nationalstaatliche Grenzen grundsätzlich im Hinblick auf ihre Durchlässigkeit an Bedeutung. Dennoch sind Grenzen und Grenzziehungen nie bedeutungslos geworden. Nationalstaatliche Politiken und Rahmungen bestimmen grundlegende Ausrichtungen, die diesseits und jenseits von Grenzen spezifische Implikationen mit sich bringen. Hiermit gehen Ein- und Abgren- zungsprozesse einher, (regionale) Identitäten, „Wir“-Gefühle und Fragen nach Heimat. Der Beitrag gibt vor diesem Hintergrund eine theoriegeleitete Einführung in zentrale Konstrukte und Konzepte, die im grenzüberschreitenden Kontext Bedeutung erlangen: Grenze(n) und Grenzziehungen, (raumbezogene und regionale) Identitäten sowie Hei- mat. Am Beispiel der Großregion werden Identifikationsprozesse ausgeleuchtet und ein- geordnet.“

Since the publication of "La frontière linguistique en Belgique et dans le Nord de la France (1896–1898)", the Belgian study of the historical origin of the demarcation between Germanic and Romance people cannot be written without referring to this fundamental work. The author, Godefroid Kurth contributed in shaping a historical object in regards to its methodological, chronological and topographical aspects. This work takes place in a national as well as European continuum. In the second half of the nineteenth century, the definition of a national identity is conceived according to criteria considered as scientific. In this configuration, the linguistic and racial elements were strongly mobilized. Our ambition with this paper is to go back to the redaction context of Kurth’s book, and thereby understand the sources of the historical but also topographical issue of the Linguistic Frontier in Belgium.“

Abstract: „De l’automne 1914 au printemps 1915, plusieurs dizaines de milliers de réfugiés belges affluent dans les ports du nord de la France. Afin de ne pas encombrer ces précieuses bases arrières, ils sont systématiquement évacués, soit vers la Grande-Bretagne, soit vers le sud de la France. Face à l’encombrement des réseaux ferrés et routiers, le ministère de la Guerre et celui de la Marine doivent organiser tant bien que mal une évacuation par voie maritime vers La Pallice. Cet article analyse cette opération à partir du point de vue de la Marine nationale en s’appuyant sur les archives centrales conservées au Service historique de la Défense à Vincennes. Ce dossier met tout d’abord de nouveau en lumière les limites de l’organisation française à la veille de la Grande Guerre que ce soit la charnière interarmées, l’articulation entre marines militaire et marchande ou la structure du commandement naval. Tout au long de l’opération, il s’avère ensuite impossible de dépasser l’improvisation initiale et de mettre sur pied un service régulier géré par la Marine nationale, même si les différents acteurs recherchent, au nom des impératifs humanitaire, patriotique et diplomatique, des accommodements permettant de dépasser corporatismes et particularismes. Enfin, la question des pêcheurs belges réfugiés à Dunkerque fait l’objet d’un véritable imbroglio entre d’une part les réfugiés, d’autre part les autorités françaises civiles et militaires, locales et gouvernementales et, enfin, le gouvernement belge en exil.“
