Abstract: „During the three quarters of the twentieth century the Dutch coalmines existed, migrant workers were recruited in different roles and numbers. In the build up and expansion phase of the industry before the 1930s the mining companies needed skilled and experienced workers. They found them mainly in the nearby German mining districts of Aachen and the Ruhr. These migrants transferred their professional experience to unskilled Dutch miners, so over the years the mining companies became less dependent on skilled miners from abroad. At the end of the 1920s also unskilled migrant workers were recruited, for instance from Poland. In the depression of the 1930s they were the first to get fired again. From that time on, Dutch miners formed the skilled core of the labour force. In the period after the Second World War, the mines were able to keep many of them (and their sons) as regular and stable workers. The relative number of mi-grants employed by the Dutch mines was much lower than in the years around 1930. Foreigners, in the 1950s mainly from Italy and Austria, in the 1960s from Spain, Yugoslavia and Morocco, most of them unskilled, were only recruited as temporary labourers, as guest workers.“

Abstract: „Increasing processes of globalization, which reach people’s everyday life more and more, make new and individual scopes of action possible and real. The latter bring about configurations of the social and territorial dimensions of human action which break up the traditional comprehension of societal spaces. The concept of the transnational social space is helpful to overcome the unity of territorial and social space and to study social figurations anchored in different national states. The present article aims at the specific context of border regions, respectively crossborder labour markets, with special focus on the construction of a transnational social space. Hence, following the social geography centred on subjects and actions, some conditions and impacts of the cross-border commuter phenomenon in the Greater Region SaarLorLux, widely based on the empiric research of the author, will be discussed.“

„In wartime, neutral territory beckons as a beacon of safety from the conflict and strife. This was especially true for the neutral Netherlands in the First World War (1914–1918), which was situated within a short distance of the Western Front and was bordered by belligerent Germany and German‐occupied Belgium. The Dutch land border became the country's most important neutrality frontier, functioning as the geographical place where neutrality began and ended, which necessitated increased border security, witnessed new border‐crossing activities, and ensured that life for border residents changed dramatically. This paper illustrates that, once Germany occupied Belgium, the Dutch border region in the south became a fraught zone between ‘war’ and ‘peace.’ But the eastern border with Germany proper also changed in character. The war situation and changing circumstances at the frontier impacted on the relationship between locals and the state (the authority in charge of border security) and changed locals’ understandings about what it meant to be ‘neutral,’ a ‘frontier‐zone resident,’ and ‘Dutch’ in this extraordinary situation.“

Abstract: „Along the Dutch-Belgian and Dutch-German border a new and interesting kind of transmigration is developing, that is migration over only a few kilometres across the border. The main characteristic of these Dutch short-distance transmigrants is that they have their houses in Belgium/Germany, but their social and working life still takes place in the Netherlands. Their transmigration is hence very elastic. This elasticity invokes the interesting question: what kind of (trans)national identity these Dutch are displaying and to what extent the Dutch desire to be and/or are socially provoked to be integrated in the neighbouring Belgian/German society. These cross-border spaces in which the short-distance migrants have their residences could very well be interesting micro-scale laboratories of the future of the nation-state in the European Union.“

Abstract: „Parts of Belgium, France, Germany and Luxembourg which comprise the Great Region have witnessed an increase in the mobility of workers and in the degree of political collaboration. Nevertheless, this evolution does not seem to have had an impact on the consumption habits of workers who tend to remain quite different in Arlon, Luxembourg and Metz. In contrast, people with less mobility but more time available, such as the retired and young, seem to exhibit the same pattern of consumption.“
