Abstract: „Studies on the connection between migration and urbanity are usually concerned with conditions and developments in cities. The presence of ‘urbanity’ in rural space is the topic of the present contribution. It will be discussed using the example of residential migration in the Greater Region SaarLorLux. The massive influx of residential migrants from Luxembourg into the border regions of the neighbouring countries is a relatively recent phenomenon, the main cause of which lies in the developments in the real-estate market in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. This phenomenon is of special interest for the topic of migration in rural areas in two regards: because of the important demographic changes produced by the residential migrants in individual border villages and because of the complex composition of the group of residential migrants, which is extremely differentiated regarding the dimension rural—urban. Central to the article is the question, whether urban attitudes and practices become visible in German border villages, and, if so, how the migratory movement from Luxembourg influences this ‘rural urbanity’. Furthermore, taking the everyday practices of the residential migrants as starting point, it asks in how far the dichotomy urbanity—rurality presents a conceptual approach for the examination of individual and structural integration processes.“

Abstract: „Im Zuge der Globalisierung und Liberalisierung der Wirtschaft spielt nicht nur die internationale und interregionale Mobilität von Kapital, Waren und Dienstleistungen im Rahmen internationaler Wertschöpfungsketten, sondern auch die Mobilität von Arbeitskräften sowie von Studierenden und Auszubildenden eine immer größere Rolle. Am Beispiel der grenzüberschreitenden Berufsausbildung in der Großregion (Saarland, Lothringen, Luxemburg, Rheinland-Pfalz, Wallonien) beschäftigt sich der Beitrag mit der Frage, wie interregionale und grenzüberschreitende Mobilität durch das Zusammenspiel unterschiedlicher Dimensionen von Distanz (Similarität und Diversität) zwischen den beteiligten Regionen bedingt wird. Ferner wird untersucht, wie diese unterschiedlichen Dimensionen der Distanz mobilitätsfördernd modifiziert werden können. Als Ergebnis kann festgestellt werden, dass die Aushandlung von Rahmenvereinbarungen zur grenzüberschreitenden Berufsbildung in der Großregion sowie die geschlossenen Vereinbarungen selbst zum Abbau insbesondere der institutionellen Distanzen zwischen den Bildungssystemen in den einzelnen Regionen beitragen. Dadurch wird die grenzüberschreitende Berufsausbildung maßgeblich gefördert und die Voraussetzung zur Entstehung einer grenzüberschreitenden Bildungsregion geschaffen.“

Abstract: „The year 2020 challenged and put into question seeming certainties. The nation states responded to the spread of the coronavirus with varying restrictions of freedom(s), as well as temporary reintroduction of border controls or closures. 35 years after the signing of the Schengen Agreement, the issue of internal border controls within the EU resurfaced – with varying effects on border regions. Buildung upon a constructivistic perspective and based on a qualitative content analysis of newspaper articles of the Saarbrücker Zeitung in spring 2020, the Working Paper traces central discussion processes with a spatial focus on the cross-border area of the Greater Region. Our findings show that reports on securing border crossings outweigh those about reopening borders, underlining the effect of border closings as a sudden rupture with major effects on the lives of border residents, especially cross-border commuters. The actors demand a significant expansion and intensification of cross-border communication and cooperation in response to these experiences.“

Abstract: „This article investigates the capacities of children to participate actively in their lives in the Belgian-German borderlands in the time period between World War I and World War II. The article interprets a body of historical sources that has hitherto been left unexplored – namely, borderland child ego documents – with the help of insights from child studies and border studies. These ego documents unfold as borderland child heterotopias. Borderland child heterotopias include material places and creative linguistic loci established by or for those considered in crisis in relation to the rest of society based on their age within or outside child spaces of modernity. The borderland child heterotopias offer a unique gateway to borderland children’s past imaginations for a better world.“

Abstract: „This paper analyses everyday practices carried out by the residents of the Saarland, Lorraine, Luxembourg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Wallonia in the neighbouring regions abroad. The key assumption is the consideration that the inhabitants of the Greater Region SaarLorLux define the transborder reality of life of this region through their cross-border performance of everyday practices. Such a socio-constructivist perspective is not interested in what the Greater Region SaarLorLux actually is, but in what ways it is constituted or how it manifests itself in the daily lives of its inhabitants. Therefor the most common cross-border everyday practices, such as shopping for everyday needs, leisure-time shopping, outdoor recreation/tourism, cultural events, as well as visiting friends and family are looked at in greater detail. These observations are based on selected findings from three recent empirical studies of the study region, which have been linked to each other as well as socio-culturally and socioeconomically mapped in order to carve out the spatial organization, the motives and other contextual factors of cross-border everyday practices in the Greater Region SaarLorLux. This approach allows reconstructing mobility flows and spatial emphases in the context of everyday practices and gives insights into the nature of cross-border living realities in the Greater Region SaarLorLux.“
