„Borders engender cultural and socio-political interaction between states. Especially in border regions, issues of nationality and identity sharpen in times of political tension. As early as 1933, for instance, Limburg faced strong influence of the rising National Socialist Third Reich, partly because of the many thousands of German migrants - ‘Rijksduitsers’ - who lived and worked there. Fierce propaganda and intimidation had to activate these so-called ‘Volksgenossen’, but in addition, the Limburgers, as ‘race-Germans’, also belonged in this Reich, according to Berlin. They had strayed from Deutschtum and had to be reclaimed with the use of propaganda. This early invasive socio-political influence process – a clear prelude to the occupation years ‘40-45’ – is examined in this article from German and Dutch sources. What was the impact on the daily lives of border residents, who traditionally fostered close ties with neighbours across the border? To answer this question, this article presents new cross-border regional research in the periphery of Limburg as a contribution to the broader historiography of Dutch WWII-history.“

Aus den Verlagsangaben: „Considering the myriad cross-border regions that the EU counts, it is impossible for the European Commission to map detailed territorial cross-border effects in all of the EU’s border regions for the impact assessments it conducts. National governments also face obstacles when seeking to cohesively integrate cross-border impact assessments in the existing frameworks that they use to assess the impact of new legislative, policy and enforcement measures. Even border regions or cross-border entities themselves face challenges in implementing impact assessments in their own territories. Despite the need for structural analyses of the border effects of newly adopted legislation and legislation under review, in terms of policy and enforcement, there are issues regarding the availability of academic resources, relevant tools and know-how. For the last couple of years, researchers from Maastricht University have been assessing as a bottom up exercise the potential effects of legislative proposals on the specific Dutch/German and Dutch/Belgium cross-border territories. This article presents the methodology used and the experiences gained from 2016 to 2019 by highlighting a number of interesting cases. It also offers future ideas for conducting similar “bottom-up” regulatory territorial impact assessments in cross-border regions.“

Abstract: „This paper analyses feelings of socio-cultural proximity and distance with a specific focus on the tourist experience in cross-border shopping and everyday life practices in border regions. We examined shopping practices of Dutch border crossers who visit the German town Kleve in the Dutch–German border region. This particular border context has allowed us not only to reflect on a multidimensional approach towards socio-cultural proximity and distance, but also to examine how these different dimensions express themselves in the tourist experience when it comes to people and places that are geographically ‘close’ but assumingly socially and culturally ‘distant’ from home. Although some differences prompted feelings of discomfort, in particular, differences in social engagement, feelings of comfort stand out in our analysis of cross-border shopping tourism. Furthermore, our study shows that shopping tourism and exoticism, on the one hand, and everyday routines and the mundane, on the other hand, are closely intertwined in the lives of people living in a border region, resulting in a fluid interpretation of the exotic and the mundane in the cross-border context.“
